“Akela the Rock Glacier” for
Olympic National Park
The Terminus project for Olympic National Park aims to commemorate the melting glaciers of the Olympic Mountains through art. My assigned glacier is called “Akela”, which is the largest and most developed “rock glacier” located near the Grey Wolf Ridge. A rock glacier is a flowing body of rocks that moves down a mountain due to interstitial ice. Akela formed somewhere between 3,000-5,000 years ago and has been extinct/inactive for at least 300 years. Below is an aerial image of Akela - the tongue shaped mass is the glacier and the glacial lake can be seen below.
